Active Listening Skills for Workplace Managers

One of the main principles of the Ubuntuworks Project is active listening. In the workplace, this skill has become a lost art form. As your manager or a difficult co-worker talks, it’s important to listen carefully, but you don’t have to agree with everything they say. Active listening skills you might use can include repeating back what you heard from them. And later, avoid gossiping or venting with co-workers, and make a record of things as they happen so you have support for a complaint if it comes to that.

The Ubuntuworks Resource Hub provides organizations and individuals interested in a more connected and compassionate world with data, stories, studies and support for the importance of Ubuntu-based principles in our world.

What is Active Listening?

This is a skill that many managers struggle with. It’s essential for creating a productive, friendly, and respectful workplace. Actively listening entails focusing on the other person, attempting to understand not just the words spoken but also the emotion behind them. It also entails responding appropriately and remembering what was said as well. Active listening is a valuable skill in which the listener makes a conscious decision. It allows you to empower yourself to become more effective in your role, as a result. As opposed to passive listening, it is an intentional act meant to demonstrate that we have heard what the other person has said. It is done by focusing on his or her words and asking questions to get deeper into the essence of their message. It is one of the most effective communication skills that can be learned and practiced by anyone.

Why should managers have Active Listening skills?

Listening attentively allows managers to better understand and influence their team members. It also allows you to demonstrate respect and assist in the building of stronger manager-employee relationships. Having excellent listening skills will not only improve your productivity as a manager, but it will also assist you in negotiating and making decisions. It’s a vital part of being a good manager. Yet, so many people either don’t know how to do it or are unwilling to. When you’re a manager, listening is more than just about hearing what other people have to say. It’s about understanding what they want out of the situation and how you can help them get it. So instead of just waiting for your turn to speak, start actively listening today.
